Millions of taxpayers typically file their tax return at the beginning of the year to get a refund. Until today, it was uncertain when refunds would be paid out due to the government shutdown that began on December 22, 2018.

Under previous government shutdowns, the IRS was prohibited from paying out tax refunds without Congressional approval. However, Trump administration lawyers have ruled that refunds can be disbursed during the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The IRS also announced that they will begin to process returns starting on Monday, January 28, 2019. Great news for taxpayers that count on those refunds every year!
